Schaffhausen,
with the Russian name Volkovo, is located on the Wiesenseite (meadow side) of
the Volga River. (click on the map on the left hand side to see the location of
Schaffhausen). This village is located to the very north of the Volga and
is listed as the first in the line of the Volga colonies going north to south.
Shaffhausen was one of the 104 original villages founded on the 13th of August
1767 with a population of 49 families consisting of 74 males, 79 females with a
total of 153 souls. In 1857 there were 69 families and in 1914 there were
31 families consisting of 45 males, 41 females with a total of 87 souls.
