HISTORY OF OUR CHAPTER:
On August 3, 1979, Ruth M. Amen and Frances Amen of
the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia met in Hays with
several persons brought together by Irene (Rupp) Leiker. The group
was interested in forming an AHSGR chapter in Western Kansas.
AHSGR exists, it was explained, to help people learn more about their
German Russian ancestors, so that they can preserve the rich culture of
their heritage. Eager to continue with forming a chapter, those
present set an organizational meeting for September 9th at Jefferson
School (now Holy Family Elementary), Hays. On that date, people
attended from as far away as St. Peter, Tribune, and Ulysses.
After Norbert Dreiling, Leona W. Pfeifer, Larry Werth,
and Lawrence Weigel drafted by-laws for the new chapter, another meeting
was held on October 7th. On that day, a total of 66 persons
officially became the first members of the SUNFLOWER CHAPTER of the
American Society of Germans from Russia.
