When the Germans from Russia settled in the area of Ellis County, Kansas the first thing they did was to erect a  cross in a field in order for them to hold worship services until a proper church would be built.  These churches would become an important part of these people.  It is through these church records that we are able to determine from many of them where they came from, whom they married, how their families grew, and where they were laid to their final rest.  Next to the census lists from the Russian Archives these are the next most important genealogical research tool.
